Registration Required to Submit Application
Before applying for a federal grant, organizations must register with SAM.gov and Grants.gov. There is no fee.
SAM.gov Registration
SAM.gov registers organizations that do business with the federal government and provides each entity with a unique entity identifier (UEI). Keep the following in mind:
- The SAM registration process typically takes 7-10 business days
- If your organization has previously registered, make sure it is active with an updated point of contact and email
- SAM registration must be renewed annually
Grants.gov Registration
Once you have received the organization's UEI, visit Grants.gov to continue registration. Be sure to:
- Use the same email address and point of contact from your SAM.gov registration for your Grants.gov account
- Use your organization's UEI from SAM.gov for your profile

State-Specific Requirements
Additionally, you may be required to get a letter of intent or site characterization letter for your application from your state agency. The deadlines and requirements vary by state and grant type; contact your state agency to confirm what you need or come to one of our state-specific webinars in the fall after the grant guidelines are released.
